Forgotten Man
as snow fell white through air in silence thick
and thuds and cracking echoed cross the hill
my pounding ears beheld the muzzle click
I braced my jumping heart to hear the kill
the shot rang out like cannons on the fourth
I tried to run but froze like in a dream
to ashes in my mouth turned days of mirth
collapsing in the snow I made to scream
on feet I stumbled up and scanned the ground
and waited for the earth to cease its spin
his memory I had to honor now
to quit or die would be a deadly sin
for freedom and his wife I puffed and ran
my friend would not become "Forgotten Man"
